When it comes to weekend activities, no one does it better than
Nigerians. From viewing centres that are packed to the brim with football
enthusiasts to numerous ceremonies (aka Owambe) taking place simultaneously, the
weekend is the most anticipated time of the week for Nigerians.
The weekend is the perfect time for most Nigerians to recharge
their health batteries, spend time with loved ones, attend parties
and/or indulge in some other pleasures.
TGIF (Thank God it’s Friday) is no longer a word, it’s a
movement and one that is held in high regard especially by the working class
population in the metropolitan areas in the country.
The weekend is here again and here are 4 things you should do to
maximize your weekend.
1.Unplug totally
The reason you are still stressed during the weekend is most
probably because you have not really left the office in your mind. Therefore,
you really need to make a conscious effort to leave work behind not just
physically but mentally. This is an essential first on how to reduce after-work stress.
Getting worried sick about a proposal you submitted on Thursday
while you should be enjoying a meal of Efo riro(vegetable soup)
and pounded yamwill not make things better. Therefore, unplug totally and try to relax.
2.Devote some time to exercise
From relieving stress to boosting brainpower, the gospel of
exercising has not been better preached. But, sadly, multitudes of Nigerians
still do not exercise.
This weekend doesn’t have to go the way the others have gone.
Even if for 10 minutes, engage in an exercising activity. Jog around your
house, do some push-ups, join a fitness club in your neighbourhood, skip a
little. By any means, jolt your body out of inertia and start investing in your
long term health. In the end, your body, your family and your future self
yourself will thank you for it.
3.Relax and Unwind
You are always too serious. Always! Does this seem like the
comments you’ve been receiving lately from close friends and colleagues? If
yes, it might be time for you to unwind a little, and lucky you, weekend is
here.
To relax and maximize your weekend, try reading a book you have
been longing to read, or go swimming at that new pool in your neighbourhood.
Jackie Chan’s Dragon Blade is now out at the cinemas, try seeing that, or
better still go on a date with that person you care about. Try going to the
beach or go cart racing, just do whatever it is you do for fun.
4.Reflect and plan for the new
week
Unplugging, exercising and unwinding can take up virtually all
your weekend. But for the true achievers out there, for the outliers, for those
that make all the difference. They understand that the best way to start a
thing (whatever it is), is to start with the end in mind. To maximize your
weekend, schedule some time to reflect on the past week and plan for the week
ahead.
Taking as little as 30 minutes to reflect on your biggest
achievements in the past week and those things you did right or wrong while
drawing valuable lessons is a great way to maximise a weekend.
Also, remember that people with clear, written goals accomplish
far more in a shorter period of time than people without them could ever
imagine. So, set goals for your week.
Implement these tips this weekend and see how a lot better you
will feel knowing that you have successfully maximized your weekend.
